My ipod won't connect to itunes?

i just installed itunes, since i got a new computer cause my old one didn't work. i installed itunes, and i plugged in to put more songs into my ipod, but my ipod's not even connected to it. what do i do!? cause i'm gonna be on a trip to san fran, and i like listening to my ipod in the car. (:heelppp!
